1.6mm (No.1) - 89kg Breaking Strain - Maximum suggested picture weight 22kg
Our Low-Stretch cord is made in the UK from white polyester fibre.
Laboratory tests show that at any given breaking strain, the extension with nylon was around 26%, but with polyester, only around 12%. They also tested the breaking strains which, as you can see, are very high. Polyester cannot rot, nor will moisture from the atmosphere change its characteristics.
As a guide, to allow for 'shock' loading, the picture weight should be no more than about one quarter of the breaking strain. The breaking strains are regularly been checked and tested.
Every framer fears the news from a customer that "the cord broke and the picture fell onto the grand piano". Sometimes the cord did actually break, but often that would be an old cotton cord, which could rot. More likely, the cord becomes untied from the eye, or the eye itself pulls out, breaks or comes open.
Take care always to select fixing hardware which is more than strong enough.
